- My GG grandmother gave her place of birth in the 1861 Census as Carluke and in the 1881 Census as Allanton. Is Allanton part of Carluke?Jim Crain
- Hello Jim
Carluke is described in Fullarton's Gazetteer as a parish bounded by
Cambusnethan, Carstairs, Lanark, Lesmahagow and Dalserf. Allanton is
described as being an estate in the parish of Cambusnethan.
From my own knowledge of the area Allanton lies to the south of the A 71 east
of the village of Newmains. Carluke on the other hand is on the A 73 about 7
or 8 miles south of Newmains through which the A 73 passes.
By today's measurements of travel the places are not far apart but still a
significant distance in years gone by.
Hope this helps
