      One-on-One Critique with Holly Thompson

Holly Thompson is an author and creative writing/literature
professor at Yokohama City University. We are honored to have her in
Taipei for one-on-one critiques and a lecture
      on December 21st.

      Critique Time: 12/21/07, 3-5pm

Place: National Taiwan Univ., Le-Xue Guan, 3rd Floor, Linguistics,
      Room 302

Fee: NT$1000 per person for SCBWI members, $1250 per person for non-
      SCBWI members
Note: You may pay in person the day of the critique.

Deadline: Please send your manuscript (in a document file) to
      kathleenahrens@... by 12/14 at 5pm. Say ¡¥Holly Thompson
      critique¡¦ in the subject heading.

What to submit: One manuscript in English: either the first chapter
      (s) of your novel (approximately 3000 words) or picture book
(suggested 800-1200 word maximum since this is usually the maximum
length for a picture book nowadays). Holly will also look at rough
drafts of translations for illustrators that would like to see their
work published in the American market.

Method of critique: Holly will receive your manuscript in advance
and prepare written comments for you. In addition, she will also
meet with you one-on-one for 15 minutes to discuss her critique with
you in person. You may tell her what you would like to get out of
the critique when you send in your manuscript, so that she can
tailor her comments specifically to your needs.

Holly Thompson earned her M.A. in English (creative writing/fiction)
from New York University. Long-time resident of Japan, she is a
lecturer at Yokohama City University, where she teaches creative
writing, academic writing, short stories and American culture. Her
novel Ash (Stone Bridge Press, 2001) set in Kagoshima and Kyoto,
Japan, has been recommended as a teaching tool in classrooms
studying Japan, Asia and intercultural issues. Her short stories
have been published in magazines and journals in the United States
and Japan and anthologized in The Broken Bridge: Fiction from
Expatriates in Literary Japan (Stone Bridge Press, 1997). Her
picture book The Wakame Gatherers (Shen's Books, 2007) depicts a
bicultural girl who goes seaweed gathering with her Japanese and
American grandmothers. Holly is Regional Advisor of the Tokyo
chapter of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (
      SCBWI Tokyo).
