Akim has a six-stringed modern guitar, though it doesn't look terribly modern. I'd like to get him some sheet music for Medieval music so he doesn't just sit around playing "traditional Irish ballads" that are really only a couple hundred years old at most. This is in lieu of buying him a whole new instrument which he might not like or want to take the time to learn to play.

The question is, what Medieval instruments, if any, are (1) six-stringed, (2) tuned to "Standard Tuning," that is, with the strings tuned from a low E, to a high E, traversing a two octave range—EADGBE? (I had to look these things up: I'm not a guitarist and if you ask for more information than that, I won't be able to tell you.)

The next question after that, of course, is "Does anyone have sheet music and/or tablature for those pieces, or know where I might be able to find them?"

          D'vorah,

The tuning is actually not as important as one would think. As long as the distance between the highest and lowest note in a piece is do-able by your instrument, you can change the key of the guitar with a capo bringing it in line with the piece (for the most part) http://www.stringsandbeyond.com/whatisacapo.html

As for music, I know there were several 6 stringed guitar like instruments (up through 12-15 strings) around the cultures during the main SCA periods. As a wind instrument player I am not sure how vital it is that music be written for the specific number of strings but with the winds, other than the key, you can play any piece of music on any instrument and it will be the same tune. My trumpet has 3 valves and my clarinet has, way to many to actually count, keys but I can play the same pieces on both.

Will the music sound exactly the same as in the composers time, probably not, but the modern materials would cause that effect even if the music was specifically written for your instrument.

Thanks so much! This will help a lot. I'd still rather, I think, have an actual discussion with people who play, and hear from those who've researched but not (yet?) uploaded files), but this should get me started.
