Well, first I would start with finding what time period and region you are interested in. There are names that were common over large time spans and some over large areas, many less so.
It is much, much easier to start with a source of period names and find one you like, than to come up with some name, historical, fantasy, made up etc and then try to find some how to document it.
Remember that some cultures and languages have names that are going to be very difficult for many people, even heralds, to announce correctly.
Some people will use a variation on their regular name. I decided on "Stefan" because my middle and seldom used name is "Stephen". I also knew that one of the English king's near my time period was named "Stefan".
Other people go out of there way to pick a name very different from their regular name. Perhaps they hate their regular name and want to "start over". Or some people think that a totally different name will help them keep their regular life and their persona life separated.
