  • You haven't seen period Japanese military using hand-held shields due to the fact they didnt. In-combat personal defense was performed using whatever weapon was in the combatant's hand at the time(i.e. daisho, naginata, yari, etc.). If your marshal is telling you to become experienced with hand shields, it's probably because he wants you to know what you'll be up against in future...
