"In the mountain depths,
Treading through the crimson leaves,
Cries the wandering stag.
When I hear the lonelt cru,
Sad, -ow sad- the autumn is!" - Sarumaru alive around the time of Emperor Gemmio (708 - 715).
"Oku yama ni
Naku shika no
Koe kiku toki zo
Aki wa kanashiki" - Japanese version of the above poem.
About the poem: The cry of the stag during mating season is considered to be a very sad and lonely sound. Deer are sacred animals, and are believed to be the messengers of Gods, the "kami no tsukai". The capital Nara once was home to large roaming herds of deer who were allowed to freely live unmolested. The antlers of deer that have been naturally shed were used in period medicines. When the stags antlers are paired with maple leaf themes, it represents longing and melancholy.
