This is an offshoot of the 2001 Waka project at
http://www.temcauley.staff.shef.ac.uk/index.shtml, which is the best single
source of classical Japanese poetry on the web. Thomas has begun recording
himself reading the poems (in Japanese and English) and has created the
above page with a Java applet to listen to them.

What's especially cool is that currently he is recording poems from the
Teika Jika Awase, a poetry competition in late Heian/early Kamakura (I
believe) involving Fujiwara no Teika. You can hear the back-and-forth of
the poems, as he announces the teams and the number in the sequence. There
are only a few online right now but hopefully there will be more soon.
