Someone mentioned a kanji firefox extension on here a few days ago so I went
      off and investigated.

For those who haven't got one and would like one, go to the following

      This installs rikaichan
      https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2471

and the dictionary is on this page (I would link to the Japan-English but
that's a bit presumptuous of me, there are Japan-others)
      http://www.polarcloud.com/rikaichan/

Voila, re-start firefox, hover over a kanji character and it gives the
meaning (or several possible meanings in most cases)

      $$
