      It may be useful as many fishermen were honest unless the business were poor and the next boat you found was unarmed (pirates and criminals are great supporters of gun-control).
      And as sail technology in Asia quickly advanced to a very high level then stopped (as did the Arab ships), there may be little difference between of 15th century Junk and a 19th century junk.

      While stationed in Bahrain, I watched the Dhows and the only difference between the modern ones and the medieval seemed to be the addition of a deisel engine. Otherwise the structure, design and even sail-plan was identical to whatever Sinbad would have sailed.
