      A sai or jitte is essentially a thrusting mace with a curved
      crossguard. Each of the points of the crossguard must be padded as
      a thrusting tip as well, given the short length of the weapon and
      the proximity of the points to the opponent's face and body. Some
      type of heavy foam or rubber would be preferable for the crossguard
      because of the torque involved in either stopping or guiding the
      opponent's weapon away.
