MOstly naming problems (I hope to get your book soon). By listening to you on the list, I get the impression that Japanese naming conventions are much more complex than I'd realized. My persona is the son of a papermaker. I'd like to use a name like Masahide or some such for my father's name, but am unsure now if it works for a commoner who is not famous. I've chosen Yahaki (fletcher) as my byname (recent conversation on the list indicates that it should be Yahakiya). As I have been given arms, I would like to have a surname and I like Kitashiro a lot but am not sure I can use it, because I am from the Barony of Northkeep and cannot translate Northkeep into Japananese to use as a locational byname. Kitashiro no Masamune could be either a surname or a locational, and I don't know how the CoH/CoA will view it. I also don't want to "assume" a surname, because it seems presumptuous to me.
However, I also need to study up a lot on mainland Asian cultures (especially Mongol, Korean, and Chinese) because my persona left Japan in about 1314.
