A question regarding SCA culture and the use of period Mon. In period Japan, family crests were worn on clothing and displayed on field banners. It was not always the mon of the person, but sometimes that of the family they were pledged.
So, when executing a SCA Japanese persona, I have selected a time and place, occupation, and a rough background story. This includes origin family.
Finally to the question: In the SCA, is it appropriate to decorate clothing with the actual mon of the period families of your persona? Or, can you only use the designs approved inside the SCA?
Just wondering before I start Katagami stenciling my hand made garb with unacceptable designs.
Thank you for the help.
