Monday, 12th January 2004, at 7:00 PM in the Khalili Lecture Theatre
of SOAS, the African Society will host the U.K. Premier of HERITAGE,
the latest film by renowned Nigerian filmmaker Ladi Ladebo. Ladebo
represents the last of the celluloid filmmakers in his country. The
screening of HERITAGE at the School of Oriental and African Studies
will mark the beginning of the U.K. tour of the film. HERITAGE (16mm,
90 mins) combines both documentary and fictional styles to explore
the issue of the illegal smuggling of African artefacts for sale on
the international art market. The film also tells the story of a
family reunion, as an American research student travels to Nigeria in
search of a respected archaeologist, wrongfully imprisoned for the
smuggling a rare bronze chest of Oduduwa the progenitor of the
Yoruba, only to find out that the archaeologist is his father. The
film was produced in part with the support of the
French government and has been well received during screening in
Lagos, Nigeria and Zurich, Switzerland with plans of creating a
documentary on artefact smuggling based on the film.

Producer, writer, director Ladi Ladebo has a long history of
filmmaking in Nigeria with producer credits for film such as BISI,
DAUGHTER OF THE RIVER (1977) and COUNDOWN AT KUSINI (1976), written
by Wole Soyinka and directed by Ossie Davis. Ladebo's directing
credits have included advocacy films such as award winning IN THE
NAME OF TRADITION (1994) focusing on the issue of female circumcision
in Nigeria. His recent film BABA ZAK was featured at the African
      film festival FESPACO in 2001.

      HERITAGE will be shown at:

School of Oriental & African Studies
      Thornhaugh Street
      Russell Square
