Perhaps the 'sickness' of a such a culture is not in its practices at all,
or even the emphasis on atonement, but rather in the orthodox assumption that
the best the adherents of the faith could do was attain heaven and
companionship with or perpetual adoration of God, rather than union.
It seems that any methods could potentially be effective foci for mystical
or magickal practice, yet also that any methods could be used as tools of
hindrance. Self-flagellation may seem extreme, but something as innocuous as
daily devotional prayers could be just as potentially harmful if done in a
fashion which perpetuated ignorance, perhaps by reinforcing the idea of
separation from the diety or the idea that direct knowledge was undesirable
compared to continual petition for salvation.
