IMAGINE A SEMESTER “UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN”

STUDY IN Viterbo, ITALY with NAU Professor Tom Paradis

    Fall Semester, 2011

    Through USAC and NAU

    University Studies Abroad Consortium

Cultural Landscapes from Italy to America

(NAU equivalent: GGR 370 Cultural Geography)

This course explores our every-day built environment and the cultural processes that have shaped it. Students will apply a range of historical, political-economic, demographic, technological, and ecological factors to explain our human landscapes, using architectural styles and geographical patterns as key indicators. Students will gain research and landscape analysis skills through field trips and projects. (300-400 level, taught in English)

    Rural and Small Town Development

(NAU equivalent: GGR 574 Rural Economic Geography)

This is a course about the triumphs and challenges of small-town communities. Although their traditional economic role is diminished, smaller places are being “discovered” and “reinvented” for their perceived amenity values and quality of life. Students will investigate local issues that affect smaller places like Viterbo, and their connections to larger-scale forces. Concepts of place attachment and development will be critically examined (400-500 level, taught in English).
