Tourism and Retirement Migration: Destinations in Transition
Organizer: David Truly, Central Connecticut State University
Tourism and retirement migration has had significant impacts on communities and countries throughout the world, as destinations continue to adapt to the needs and expectations of aging tourists and retirees. Amenity migration has fueled some of this growth but a variety of other factors and motivations can be credited for changes in tourism and retirement migration. While these migration streams offer benefits for many destinations, the challenge of addressing the needs of both hosts and guests and the impacts of development can be significant. This session invites case studies and theoretical studies that examine any aspect of this topic. Possible topics could include:
- Amenity migration and tourism/retirement
- Second Home Development
- Linkages between tourism and retirement
- Impacts of tourism/retirement migration on destinations
