      21st Century Literacies: Responding to Change in a Challenging Climate

      The purpose of the ALS Teaching Institute is to gather together to discuss the scholarship on teaching and learning, the practices of instruction and administration and the importance of leisure (including various contexts of recreation, park, tourism, outdoor adventure, health, therapy, and sport) as educators strive to remain current in the techniques, content, and skills necessary for an academic life. This year’s institute will be cosponsored by California State University, Chico and California Polytechnic State University and held at the lovely Asilomar Conference Retreat Center. Asilomar is a breathtakingly gorgeous 107 acres of ecologically diverse beachfront land situated within the quaint and scenic town of Pacific Grove, offering guests the simple comforts of cozy cottages and rustic lodges and an unforgettable escape from the demands of everyday life.

      Conference Theme

      With the 21st century well underway, most educators are familiar with a focus on specific literacies for college students. Collaboration, digital literacy, critical thinking, creativity, and personal responsibility are important avenues to attain content mastery, especially when applied in innovative ways to better prepare students for a rapidly changing world. However, many faculty and professionals face challenges to the actualization of these literacies. Budget cuts, for example, prevent many departments from purchasing the technological tools necessary to promote digital literacy. In addition, universities are pushing for larger classes when in fact smaller class sizes might be better for fostering collaboration where individual feedback could be more effective for promoting critical thinking. Many universities, even those focused primarily on teaching, are pushing for increased grant funding and publications when in reality most faculty members need more time in the classroom to achieve these literacies. The move to put additional courses online has also caused many of us to wonder how to put our instruction for practice into a digital framework while fostering collaboration, critical thinking, and advocating for personal responsibility.

      The challenge to presenters at this conference is to bring forward completed research and practice papers that examine the realities of implementing and sustaining 21st century literacies in today’s learning environments. What practices have you implemented in your classroom, curricula, teaching style, or assessment methods that address these literacies? What are your successes and failures? How can we advance our teaching to incorporate these 21st century literacies in today’s climate of challenge and change?

      Based on this theme, sessions must address one or more of the 21st century literacies and papers that are accepted will be organized according to the following tracks below. Examples of what might be included in each track are provided; presenters are encouraged to think creatively about 21st century literacies and how they might be addressed in teaching and learning.

      You will need to submit your document in a Microsoft Word format and select either the Learning Activities or Research and Poster Presentation section option.

      Session Structures: Learning Activities and Research Presentations


      Learning Activities

      The purpose of these sessions is to share practical teaching techniques you have implemented and evaluated in you classroom, and that foster learning one of the literacies. To facilitate as many teaching techniques as possible, each session will have multiple presenters grouped together according to the literacy their activity addresses. Presenters will have 25 minutes to explain and demonstrate the learning activity, and respond to questions. The session must be interactive; we want to live it so we can incorporate the ideas quickly. A Learning Activity session proposal should be a maximum of two pages, single-spaced and include the following:

      1. Presenter(s) name, organizational affiliation, contact details
      2. Session title, including activity name (no more than 13 words)
      3. Needs Identification: In 150 words or less, outline the need for the learning activity and presentation and how it relates to the theme
      4. Provide a description of the learning activity
      5. Theoretical underpinnings of the activity
      6. List of resources
      7. Learning Outcomes: List learning outcomes in order of priority and use measurable terms such as “describe,” analyze,” etc. Learning outcomes should be seen to relate clearly to the need, purpose, and description statements.
      8. Hands-on or experiential elements you will include. Audience participation or an opportunity to try the activity is highly recommended.
      9. Assessment methods for the activity.
      10. Recommendations for its use by others (specific courses, target population, adaptations)

      Note: If you have a learning activity better suited to a one-hour session, you may submit this for consideration and note that you are requesting two sessions (a small number of such requests may be granted at the discretion of the planning team).

      Research and Poster Presentation

      Research Presentations. There will be a limited number of slots available for the presentation of research directly related to teaching. The formats will follow the standard IMRD format: Presenters will have 20 minutes total, 15 minutes for the presentation and 5 minutes for Q&A. Sessions will be grouped together according to the literacy addressed.

      Poster Session. Posters will be displayed during the event with one time allocated for conversations among participants and researchers.
      Please follow the same outline provided below for both types of presentations.

      The Research Presentation Proposal should include:

      1. Presenter(s) name, organizational affiliation, contact details
      2. Title of session (no more than 13 words)
      3. The abstract should be a maximum of two pages, single-spaced, including writing, figures and tables. References may be included on an extra page. Use 12-point font and one inch margins. Abstracts may describe research or may be theoretical discussions related to teaching. Abstracts based on empirical studies should contain sections devoted to an introduction, methods, results and discussion. Abstracts addressing conceptual and theoretical discussions should be presented with effective and clear sub-headings.
      4. Indicate preference: poster only, presentation only, or flexible

      Session Selection

      All submissions will be peer reviewed, with decisions based primarily on content area and overall depth as related to the conference theme. The committee reserves the right to deny any proposal and is unable to provide substantive feedback. Please do not submit a proposal for work that has been previously published or presented.

      Audio-Visual Equipment Requirements and Space Set-up

      Standard for all rooms: screen and LCD projector. You will need to bring your own computer. Rooms will be arranged in theater style. Outline any special space or room set-up requirements, and we will do our best.
