The Center for Sustainable Tourism (CST) at East Carolina University (ECU) is seeking candidates for a full-time faculty position in sustainability and tourism. The position will be filled either as tenure-track or with consideration for tenure, depending upon qualifications and the college where the academic appointment occurs. This position will be a joint appointment between an appropriate academic department and the Center for Sustainable Tourism. A demonstrated record of success in securing external funding is important.
The position is broadly defined to consider all candidates with strong evidence of sustainability-related research and teaching pertaining to tourism. Relevant fields or areas of expertise include coastal studies, business, economics, marketing, sociology, geography, political science, public administration, tourism studies, recreation and leisure, anthropology, ecology, conservation, hospitality management, biology, geology, communications or other fields that have linkages to sustainability and tourism. The CST seeks a leader or someone with strong potential to be a leader in the emerging field of sustainable tourism and who brings the necessary economic, environmental or socio-cultural expertise as it relates to tourism and sustainability that would indicate a clear understanding of the unique needs and resources of North Carolina.
The successful candidate will hold an appointment in an academic department (51%) and the CST (49%), will conduct research, secure external funding, and teach appropriate course (s) for both units, and serve as Graduate Program Director for the interdisciplinary Master of Science degree in Sustainable Tourism (http://www.ecu.edu/cs-acad/sustainabletourism/Master-of-Science-in-Sustainable-Tourism.cfm). This degree is the first of its kind in the nation and conferred by ECU’s Graduate School.
ECU is the third largest constituent institution of the UNC system and is a diverse, dynamic and growing university of nearly 28,000 undergraduate, graduate and medical students. The University is made up of seven colleges plus the Brody School of Medicine and is classified as a Doctoral/Research-Intensive University. ECU is located in Greenville, NC, a rapidly growing regional center for education, health, and retail services. The city has a population of about 85,000, is about 90 miles east of Raleigh, and only a short distance to the beaches of the Atlantic coast.
The CST (www.sustainabletourism.org) is an interdisciplinary research center housed in the Division of Research and Graduate Studies. It is positioned to have state, national and international impact and embodies innovation in graduate education, leadership development, community consultation, and collaborative research. The Center is charged with oversight of the interdisciplinary Master of Science Degree in Sustainable Tourism. Devoted to implementing sustainable practices in business operations, public policies, and individual travel behaviors, the Center offers solutions to challenges facing the tourism industry and destination communities as they balance economic viability with socio-cultural and environmental enhancement and equity.
The mission of the CST is to advance academic research and analyses that advocate sustainable practices in the travel and tourism industry; to communicate these results to businesses, government planners, destinations, and communities throughout the region, nation, and globally in order to influence public policy and business decisions; and to help university students understand the broader sustainability issues challenging the travel and tourism industry, train them for management, research, and teaching careers in sustainable tourism and help them secure internships and jobs within the industry. The CST houses a number of initiatives including but not limited to, Renewable Energy in Tourism (RETI); Climate, Weather and Tourism (CWT); Race, Ethnicity, Social Equity and Tourism (RESET); Community Sense of Place; Sustainable Practices in Tourism; and the U.S. Travel Care Code.
Research Expectations of Candidates: Demonstrated evidence of an active research program that addresses either the environmental, economic or socio-cultural aspects of tourism and sustainability is critical. Equally important, the successful candidate will serve as a catalyst for new research projects both on an individual basis and by involving faculty collaborators, and will demonstrate ability to lead and facilitate collaborative multi-partner research programs. Proven ability to secure funding to support research is most important.
Teaching Expectations of Candidates: Evidence of effective involvement in graduate research and education is required. Successful candidate will have a limited teaching role but will teach appropriate course(s) in both the interdisciplinary Master of Science in Sustainable Tourism and the academic home department.
Outreach/Service Expectations of Candidates: Desirable qualities include ability to interact with decision makers and stakeholders to formulate a responsive research agenda that can contribute to enhanced public policy, business practice, and personal behaviors in tourism. Ability to communicate research findings to both academic and practitioner audiences is very important. Successful candidate will serve as Graduate Program Director for the Master of Science in Sustainable Tourism degree.
Minimum Requirements: Doctoral degree from an appropriately accredited institution, an established research stream, publication and external funding record, and evidence of a strong teaching record. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the Center and the campus's focus on sustainable tourism, evidence of collaborative initiatives is important. Appropriate service to the university, community and profession is expected.
This position is open rank and salary will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications.
