Seattle trip review - OT but about cycling...
- Well it has been a while since I posted. I made a non bike trip to Seattle over the holidays.
I wanted to share what I experienced from a biking perspective.
I saw a lot of folks commuting, that was so cool. From my hotel I would watch people late
at night or early in the morning commuting. Not just joy riding or goofing off but really
using bikes down and dirty in the urban environment.
There were four of us, being two couples. I made a move for us to make it a green
adventure by utilizing our feet, bus and monorail. It worked! from the get go at the
airport, we got our bags and caught a bus to downtown. It was great, for a couple bucks
we rode the bus and met some locals who gave us tips about food places. After the bus
we walked a few blocks to our hotel and had a view of the Space Needle at night it was
One thing I found really cool was the "Free Zone" in the downtown area. See - after the
rush hour times the busses are FREE any where DT (downtown). So we would take
advantage of that when we got tired. So going green in seattle is easy.
Another eye catcher was the police, yes the police! They ride bikes in pairs and actually
take to you! Imagine friendly cops riding bikes. My hat is off to them, riding in some god
awful cold and rain and maintaining a good attitude as well.
Riding DT Seattle would be scary for me at first but the town has a great vibe for cyclist.
With Whole Foods close by and the REI mother ship store not too far from there and of
course Starbucks, Seattle's Best and a myriad of tiny books stores, restaurants and of the
Farmers Market. I can not forget the Space Needle and the Experience Music project at it's
Seattle for me is like San Francisco North just wetter, colder and bit less cool vibe but a
great place to experience. This trip was only a DT experience and there are many things to
do in the surrounding areas as well. It has a unique weather, but one can dress for it and
be real happy sight seeing even in winter.
I was glad to see a strong cycling vibe in the middle of winter and to meet real nice people
there too. Most folks were very approachable and friendly.
Thanks for reading about my "Green experience" in Seattle - I will be back!
