Group Description

Welcome to The Watch on the Rhine, a group created in June 2005 as 'The Black Eagle', but which was renamed in August 2007, which discusses the history of Germany. From its foundations in the aftermath of the Roman Empire's downfall, through Unification and Re-Unification, all facets of the nation's past are welcome to be debated. The figures that made its history, from the Great Elector to Frederick the Great, from Bismarck to Hitler, are also discussed. Cultural aspects are also considered. Whether you are new to Germany's history or very familiar, all have a place at the Watch on the Rhine, wherever you are in the world.

New members: Welcome to The Watch on the Rhine! Feel free to introduce yourself on the message board, and use the web features. I hope you enjoy being part of our community!

A series of topics, special posts and discussions over the next few weeks focusing on the concept of Germany having pursued a 'special path', different from both its Western and Eastern neighbours, both positive and negative, throughout its history.

This group is a member of the AVIS-PIRUM NETWORK: please see the Links for the folder on 'Other Avis-Piirum Groups' and the Constitution (in the Files section) for further information.

CAPTION: Goethe and Schiller, two of the greatest literary figures associated with Weimar Classicism, provided an example with which some 19th century German commentators argued that Germany was following a positive 'Sonderweg'.
