- "Our Father"
Beyond the ordinary earthly level of fatherhood is the real source of fatherhood: The Fatherhood of God, the Supreme Creator of all beings, who loves all His creatures with an unlimited love. He loves with a love not based on some merit, or existing good quality in His creatures, as if they had gained merit by their own unaided efforts. The love of God, the Father of all creatures, is utterly the true essential quality of His own eternal Being. Love is God. God is love itself, the infinite power of eternity that works forever for the well-being of His creatures. This eternal love, which is God Himself as He wills Himself unchangingly to be, lacks nothing, needs nothing, and desires nothing for Himself. Yet He wills to create, and wills the good of His creatures.
"who art in heaven"
Heaven means the condition of perfectly balanced power. It is a state of being in which all the energies of that being are held in perfect, easy, harmonious interplay. It is a state of spiritual bliss beyond all possible discordances.
"Hallowed be thy name."
Hallowed = Holy.
Holiness is wholeness is healthiness.
The bringing together into harmonious interrelation
the whole of being.
"Thy kingdom come."
Men look for the kingdom of heaven, the kingdom of perfection, saying `Lo! here, lo! there'. But the kingdom of heaven is within. Somewhere in the depths of our soul we can feel the possibility of the elimination of all errors, the washing away of all false ideas and wrong motives. In our depths we can feel the hidden seed of perfection. Let this hidden perfection manifest.
"Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven."
Will is spiritual power. It is sometimes pleasant to let ourselves drift or to let ourselves be moved by something other than our own will; but at such moments we are not working at our highest level. To get the best out of ourselves we must will to do so. We cannot just drift to our best. Drifting and dreaming go together. High performance requires us to be awake. At our highest level, our will is to do the will of He who sent us, thereby becoming on earth what we are in heaven.
Becoming who we really are. Let this hidden perfection manifest.
"Give us this day our daily bread."
The bubble and ferment of the rising of the bread symbolises the positive and loving, in-forming experience of daily life. The world is Love-starved. Jesus tells how to give the mysterious Bread of Heaven to those who will receive it, the Bread "not-of-time" that one eats with the "Water of eternal life", which, tasting, one shall not thirst again. Water symbolises plasticity of substance, for water adapts itself to the shape of any container into which it is poured, flexible and adaptable.
"Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those that trespass against us"
Forgiveness does not mean a careless disregard for the results of human actions. We are to forgive and remember. We're then less likely to commit the same error again. In remembering, we are not to bear grudges or harbour resentments these inhibit the free flow of the energies which make our lives possible.
"Lead us not into temptation"
Temp-tation means things and events and relationships that are presented to us in Time. We are not tempted in Eternity. To be tempted is to be stimulated through the five senses by things in Time. Time presents us with a series or sequence of stimuli one after the other. Time splits reality into little bits, each bit being a moment or instant. The fact that Time gives us only bits of reality is the reason why temptation Time-presentation is so dangerous for us. Time gives us reality in bits. Any bit of Time in isolation is deprived of its total context. If we see a thing out of context, we cannot understand it.
"Deliver us from evil."
Evil is the opposite of Live. Evil is bittyness, reduction to parts, subjection to disintegration, to corruption and to death to the understanding of who we really are. We want more life, more abundant life.
"For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory."
A perfectly tuned instrument sings out in perfect harmony when played. This fine-tunedness is Glory, the singing out of the instrument, just as the cockerel sings out clearly and fully at the dawn of the new day ... the root of the word glory can be traced to the French `gallos' or cockerel. When we become who, essentially, we are, undistorted by external forces, we act truly, and in acting truly, act gloriously. Let the hidden perfection manifest. In acting gloriously, we affirm that the source of this glory is the same source from which we spring.
"For ever and ever, Amen."
For all time, affirmed in all parts of the being, so be it.
