Nowadays there are even freeware programs with spectrum analyser and other facilities.

For many years I have used the excellent spectrum analyzer from True Audio,
www.trueaudio.com, it is a dedicated two channel measuring system based around the
standard PC soundcard audio ins and outs and is very easy to use, I wish I had one thirty
years ago when testing professional audio hardware the hardware the hard way with a signal
generator, meter, scope and notebook, in particular the analysis of distortion and hum and
noise spectra would have been so much easier. I use trrueaudio RTA mostly for room
measurements with pink noise and for set up and evaluation of vinyl playback.
