Salt doesn't improve the taste of foods, by the way, it excites the nerve
      endings on the tongue
so that they are more sensitive.
      _____
Actually, salt overexcites the sensory nerves on the tongue, rendering them
LESS sensitive to the tastes they are designed to perceive. In addition,
salt is directly caustic, it physically damages the cells and tissues it
contacts. And finally, to protect itself from this caustic material, the
body floods salt with water -- the solution to pollution is dilution -- but
this then leads to dehydration in other areas, and all in a fairly
instantaneous way. In other words, this all occurs long before you feel
thirsty or the like, that is a downstream response as the body seeks to
      replenish its water supply.

      Best to all,
      Elchanan
