Group Description

This is an established discussion list for breeders, owners, fanciers of rare livestock including poultry, cattle, sheep, pigs, goats, horses. Many of the breeds were developed for small farm and homesteading situations rather than confinement set-ups. Some of the breeds endangered include the Clydesdale horse, the British Longhorn cattle, the Tunis sheep, the Saddleback pig. Also discussion of livestock breeds that have become extinct due to crossbreeding (being absorbed into other breeds), loss of work (example...the Conestoga horse). Historical, care, selection, use in today's world are all topics to discuss. Some of the animals welcome are also uncommon rabbit breeds (such as Checkered Giants, Beverens, Harlequins, Hotots) and guineas. The list has said the majority prefer to stick to rare/unusual breeds. Thus *not* encouraged is discussion on common animals such as potbellied pigs, pygmy goats, angus cattle, Nubian goats and others that are common in today's world. With almost 9 years there's been few rules instituted - keeping the discussion focused on rare breeds was one as is no simultaneous crossposting. Come in, kick back, ask questions, find new stock or just see what these unusual breeds of livestock are. From Ankole cattle to Shetland sheep to Cleveland Bay horses and Hereford hogs this list is dedicated to keeping rare livestock functioning now and for the future.
There have been some claims this list was abandoned or replaced by other lists - that is NOT true - this list has not been and will not be surrendered to any other list. This list *has* been kept free of spam and other trash - but is very much alive and open to people who want to post on rare livestock topics.
