Group Description

The Qur'an reading forum is a group dedicated to reading and discussing translations of the Qur'an from a non-religious perspective. The goal of the group is to critically explore the Qur'an, and Islam, and the history of the Islamic world, while attempting to always be respectful of the traditions of Islam. We will strive to always remain open to the beauty of the Qur'an and the historical and religious perspectives that the Qur'ran can offer us. However, we will at the same time remain open to respectful criticism of the Qur'an and the traditions of Islam, even criticism which might call into question some of the traditional views of the Qur'an.

All you need to join is the following:
1) An open mind.
2) Willingness to accept the expression of critical comments about your own religious beliefs and critical comments about religious figures, such as Moses, Buddha, Jesus and Muhammad.
3) A copy of the Qur'an either in the original Arabic or in translation.

Please, no proselytizing from any religious perspective.

We will read the following books.

October 2010: Martin Lings's "Muhammad: His Life Based on the Earliest Sources"

December 2010 - March 2011: the Qur'an, reading one 'juz every three days, to complete the entire Koran in ninety days.
