Quote for Friday February 22, 2013

I hope I shall always possess firmness
      and virtue enough to maintain
what I consider the most enviable of all titles,
the character of an "Honest Man." (Maxim)

Quote for Saturday, February 22, 2014

You could look in the woods [for a quiet place].
You might find an old stump for a chair
or a mossy log for a couch
in a green mansion of shadows and sunbeams.
It’s not really quiet, of course.
        BLue jays scream warnings,
and wind sings in the leaves.
        But it *Feels* quiet.
        ~ Douglas Wood (<I>A Quiet Place</I>)

Whether you are looking for a gift,
or a good book group book or just a
closer look at the Sermon on the Mount,
*But I Tell You* is your choice.
More in depth then a devotional book,
more user friendly than a theological tome,
this strikes just the right note
for both the casual reader and one
seeking to look more deeply at the Sermon.

Quote Lady's Quote of the Day Volume 18, Number 53
          ISSN 1534-3073

Quote for Sunday, February 22, 2015

I hope that someone tells the offensive story
          of the Good Samaritan.
For Jesus meant it to be offensive.
          It's not about a philanthropist
with a troubled conscience who offers a handout.
It's about a man who crosses the [social] line
          not to photograph the victim,
but to tend him, accompany him and,
          having heard his experience,
          to redistribute his own wealth.
It has always challenged me, that story,
          because it exalts personal contact
          over platitudinous theory. It says;
if you're not prepared to be touched by the poor,
don't bother to talk about poverty.
~ John Bell ("Thought for the Day," Jan. 15, 2015)
