Hi All,

First i beg to be pardoned by Shruti for posting this.

What a coincidence. I happened to know the priest in Shruti's puzzle ( .... a game ). The other day the old man again went to the magic pond with some flowers numbering more than ten. He dipped the flowers in the pond only to find that the number of flowers have squared. Pleased, he offered as many flowers to the idol as his ripe old age and returned to the pond. He dipped the rest of the flowers in the pond again and found that the number has doubled. He again offered the same number of flowers to the idol as the first time, returned to the pond and dipped the rest again. This time the number halved.

That was exactly the number corresponding to his age. He offered them again to the idle with none was left with him.

What is the age of the priest ?

good luck!

Hi All,

Ed is right. The priest is 90 years old. On day 1, he dipped 15 flowers in the magic pond. The number squared to 225. He offered 90 flowers ( number equal to his age ) to the idle and is left with 135 flowers. On  day 2, he dipped them in the pond again. This time, the number doubled to 270. He offered again 90 flowers to the idol. He is now left with 180 flowers. On day 3, he dipped them yet again in the magic pond. The number halved to 90, equal to his age. He offered them all to the idol.

90 years works:

15^2 - 90 = 135
135*2 - 90 = 180
180/2 - 90 = 0

If he is 120 years old, how many flowers does he start with?
• Ed is correct. 120 years does not work. Ed had already given the correct answer earlier. Sudip Ed Murphy wrote: On Dec 20, 2007 10:29 PM,
