Group Description

FairVote - The Center for Voting and Democracy encourages the use of proportional voting systems to boost voter participation and provide fair representation to women, communities of color, and the full spectrum of political opinion. FairVote is a national non-profit, non-partisan electoral reform organization based in Takoma Park, MD.

Proportional voting systems have many advantages when compared to at-large or single-member winner-take-all systems, including that they have a tendency to encourage cooperative campaigning, create more diverse governments, and increase voter turnout. There are various forms of these systems, including choice voting (aka the single transferable vote), cumulative voting, limited voting (aka the single non-transferable vote), party list systems, and mixed-member systems.

Please use this space to discuss proportional voting news and developments, network with other academics or grassroots activists, and strengthen the coalition needed to bring proportional voting to YOUR community. Please note, this forum is intended to complement existing listservs and is moderated by FairVote staff in order to keep the spam ratio low.
