Group Description

For anyone seeking to practice, understand and discuss Christianity in terms of modern progressive ideas. If you've been frustrated with literal fundamentalism or find yourself in the "church alumni association" and want to reconnect to the Christian path of a God of love and grace, this group is for you.

What is a progressive Christian? We defy definitions, but typically a progressive Christian will agree with many of the following ideas:

* Inevitability of human progress
* Universal salvation
* Equality of religions (religious pluralism)
* Primacy of personal experience
* Rejection of literal biblical interpretations
* Emphasis on the humanity of Christ
* Right of individuals
* Emphasis and peace and justice
* Indifference to strict doctrine
* God is immanent (present in and around all things)
* Traditional forms of theism are optional

Progressive Christians often enjoy the theologies of Niebuhr, Tillich, Spong, Borg and cheerfully debate the theologies of Calvin, Edwards, Barth and any modern-day evangelical fundamentalist.

This group operates as a Special Interest Group of American Mensa, Ltd., but is open to both Mensans and non-Mensans alike. The contents of this publication represent the opinions of the writers and not of Mensa, which has no opinions.
