"A new scientific truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents and
making them see the light, but rather because its opponents eventually
die and a new generation grows up that is familiar with it." - Max Planck
Math is not a science, but a formal system. The truth is not empirically determined and
the axioms are the starting point, not the goal. Truth is derived by systematic logical
application of predefined rules, not by experiment. Therefore, mathematical truth is not
Moreover, word of Planck is not word of God. A good scientist SHOULD change its mind if
the experiment and the theoretical reasoning both point in the same direction and oposite
to the scientist's thinking, and only accepts stablished theories as temporary ones,
always subject to possible changes:
"It doesn't matter how beautiful your theory is, it doesn't matter how smart you are. If
it doesn't agree with experiment, it's wrong. "
"The idea is to try to give all the information to help others to judge the value of your
contribution; not just the information that leads to judgment in one particular direction
or another. "
"It is in the admission of ignorance and the admission of uncertainty that there is a hope
for the continuous motion of human beings in some direction that doesn't get confined,
permanently blocked, as it has so many times before in various periods in the history of

PD Nevertheless, I think that Planck was being sarcastic there, we should see the whole
context for that quote.
