The number of quadratic residues mod p is (p+1)/2 for prime p.

Does anyone know to predict the number of residues mod p a quadratic equation (ax^2+bx+c) will produce (for 0<=x<p)? Obviously, it's zero if the equation doesn't produce a square.

      thanks,
      eric
