Siblings seek bids for governor, lieutenant governor

      By The Associated Press

(7/18/05 - AUSTIN, TX) — A Fort Worth man and his
Austin sister have taken their first steps toward
seeking the Democratic nominations for Texas governor
      and lieutenant governor.

If elected, Felix and Maria Luisa Alvarado would be
the first siblings to win statewide office in Texas.

Sixty-two-year-old Felix Alvarado is vying for the
governor nomination. His 49-year-old sister, Maria
Luisa Alvarado, is vying for lieutenant governor. They
both named campaign treasurers last month, a sign
they're serious about the 2006 election.

Felix Alvarado is an assistant principal in the Fort
Worth school district. Maria Luisa Alvarado resigned
in May as a research project coordinator at the
University of Texas at Austin to focus on the race.

The siblings say their chances may be slim, but they
think Democrats need to take a stand against
Republicans, who have won all 29 elected positions
      statewide since 1999.
