Thanks for the updated list, Ram. Cornyn's apparent
unpopularity is making me think that the speculation
that Bush could nominate Cornyn to the Supreme Court
may be more serious than I'd realized. If Cornyn stays
in the Senate and faces re-election in 2008 he could
easily lose if he still has such low approval ratings.
So Bush might prefer to give a reliable conservative
like Cornyn a lifetime seat on a court than to see him
be defeated by a Democrat in Bush's home state. It
really would be quite shocking to we few liberal
Texans to see a Democrat win a statewide race, but it
        is still possible.

If Cornyn did go to the Supreme Court, either to
replace Rehnquist or another aliing Justice, it would
mean that our state would not only have Senator
Hutchison's seat up for re-election next year but also
a special election for Cornyn's seat. Like a friend of
mine said to me the other day, that would make our
normally bland state politics really go wild. We've
already got a very odd election shaping up in the
        governor's race next year.

Scalia will find a good friend if Cornyn is actually appointed. And he
may get there just in time to show his support for Edgar Ray Killen if
the case goes all the way to the Supreme Court.
