BREAKING: Political Analyst Sanderoff Projects Martinez
      Tuesday, 02 November 2010 20:30
Martinez is the first woman to be elected governor of New Mexico

Political analyst Brian Sanderoff has projected that Republican Susana Martinez has defeated Democratic Lt. Gov. Diane Denish in Tuesday's gubernatorial election.
Sanderoff of Research and Polling Inc. made his projection at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Martinez, the first Hispanic woman in the country to be nominated for governor by a major party, focused her campaign on cutting state spending and stopping what she called rampant corruption in Santa Fe. The 51-year-old Dona Ana County district attorney was critical of Gov. Bill Richardson and tried to link Denish to the administration's policies and shortcomings.
Denish, who said during the campaign that she and Richardson had a "very businesslike association," cast most of her focus during the race on job creation and education. The 61-year-old Denish was bidding to become the first female elected governor in New Mexico after being the first woman elected lieutenant governor with her election to that post as Richardson's running mate in 2002.
