WASHINGTON Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M., has hired
well-known Washington defense lawyer to represent him
in a preliminary ethics investigation into allegations
that he pressured New Mexico's fired U.S. attorney to
rush indictments against Democrats before the 2006
Domenici hired Lee Blalack lawyer to convicted
former Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham, R-Calif., and
former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn. on
Feb. 28, said Domenici spokesman Chris Gallegos.
That was the same day former U.S. Attorney David
Iglesias went public with his accusations.
Iglesias said last week he believes he was forced out
of his job for political reasons after refusing
pressure from Domenici and Rep. Heather Wilson, R-N.M.
In testimony before House and Senate committees
Tuesday, Iglesias said he "felt leaned on" and "felt
pressured to get these matters moving" by Domenici and
The Senate ethics committee opened a preliminary
inquiry this week into Domenici as required after a
complaint was filed against Domenici from a
congressional watchdog group.
Gallegos said Domenici had not been contacted by the
committee as of late Wednesday afternoon.
The same watchdog group, Citizens for Responsibility
and Ethics in Washington, asked the House ethics
committee to investigate Wilson as well. It is unclear
whether the committee will agree to the request.
