      DEPUTY PRESIDENT AT RADIOCRACY!

The Honourable Deputy President of the Republic of South Africa Mr Jacob Zuma is to deliver the keynote address at the forthcoming International Radiocracy Conference at the Royal Hotel in Durban, South Africa. The conference, being hosted by the ML Sultan Technikon's Department of Public Relations & Journalism, takes place from September 20 to 24. The theme is "Pulling Together and Predicting Pathways".

Other key players supporting Radiocracy include the South African Minister of Education Professor Kader Asmal, Minister of Environmental Affairs & Tourism Mr Mohammed Valli Moosa, Provincial Minister of Agriculture & Environmental Affairs Mr Narend Singh, and Durban Unicity Mayor Councillor Obed Mlaba.

'Radiocracy' comprises radio, democracy and development - the term being coined following a presentation by the South African President Thabo Mbeki. 'Radiocracy' represents a genuine attempt to encourage and promote the study of radio as a critical communicative instrument. Radio is also an excellent tool for the purposes of reconciliation and reconstruction toward an open society. The medium does not only provide constant companionship and entertainment but also is the sole source of information for several impoverished regions around the world.

A wide range of papers are being presented at Radiocracy. They include human rights; children; the disabled; feminism; globalisation; community, commercial & public service broadcasting; journalism and ethics; freedom of commercial speech; legal, regulatory & financial frameworks; peacebuilding; ownership and control; digital revolution; internet radio; diversity; public relations; talk radio; and training & development.

Over and above the conference itself, delegates will be treated to the Department of Fashion Design's Annual Show titled "Radio Ga Ga"; sightseeing tours of greater Durban courtesy of KwaZulu Natal Tourism Authority (www.zulukingdom.org.za); a Book Fair; and an Arts & Crafts Flea Market. Radio and television stations are to broadcast 'live' from Radiocracy, and various companies will be exhibiting at the conference.

Cost of Attendance - 1500 SA rands/130 UK pounds/190 US dollars (includes conference banquet, documentation, lunches, pre-arranged social & cultural events, registration, teas/coffees).
