What setting determines how long postfix should attempt to deliver an email if target server is not available? Will this setting work with smart host

Will this setting work with smart host configuration where smart host
      is temporarily unavailable?

      Thanks in advance

The nexthop is irrelevant. Doesn't matter if it's a local smarthost
problem or destination MX problem, or DNS resolution problem, network
problem, etc. If Postfix can't deliver after 5 days it bounces the msg.
