This topic came up on this list not too long ago. I used to attribute
the lack of support for plussed addresses to poor programming, but this
excerpt from a notification I just received from VMware is the first
evidence I've seen of a company implementing it as a policy decision. Of
course, it's lumped in with a bunch of other characters, so maybe
they're switching to a new (and inferior) email validation routine.

      "Dear Jorey Bump,

You are receiving this email because our customer records indicate you
are a License Administrator, Support Administrator or the registered
user of a VMware serial number with one or more of the follow characters
      in your User ID jorey+vmware@...:

      ( ) * + , ; < > \ ~ / :

As of 6/22/06 VMware will no longer be accepting User IDs containing
these characters. To ensure you will continue to have access to Support
and other valuable account details please visit us at
      http://www.vmware.com/vmwarestore/newstore/login.jsp and update your
profile to include an email address without the characters above."
