      FWIW this is the old syntax. The new way has "query =" with the SQL
      query itself:

      query = SELECT action FROM tablename WHERE email = '%s'

      For sender checks one might want a conditional query to also check
      against '%u' and '%d', but I have not gotten that far yet. :)
