Richard Egan, former U.S. ambassador to Ireland (2001-2003) and billionaire co-founder of EMC Corp., committed suicide August 28, 2009 in his condo in Boston. He was being treated for advanced lung cancer at a hospital in Boston when he shot himself  with a shotgun while standing in a linen closet. He was a long term resident of Hopkinton. Egan was born in 1936 in Milton and grew up in Dorchester. He had been a member of  the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve (helicopter pilot). There will be a public memorial service at EMC Corp. in Hopkinton followed by a private burial.
