Olga Mendez, first Puerto Rican woman elected to a mainland U.S. legislature, died July 29, 2009 at her home in East Harlem of breast cancer. She was born February 5, 1925 in Mayaguez to Gonzalo Aran Soler and Ursula Garcia de Aran. She was a New York state senator from 1978 to 2004 and a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1972, 1980, 1984 and 1988. Her funeral mass will be at the Church of the Holy Agony, E. Harlem. Her 'cremains' will be interred in St. Michael's Cemetery, the Bronx. Arrangements handled by Campbell Funeral Chapel, Manhattan.
