Evelyn Gandy, Mississippi Politician
- In 1959 Evelyn Gandy was the first woman appointed to Attorney General in MS. In the same year she became the first woman elected as State Treasurer. In 1972, she was the first women elected as Insurance Commissioner. In 1975 she was the first women elected as Lt. Governor of MS. She missed her chance to be the first woman elected as Governor. She was twice defeated in the Democratic primary for that office in 1979 and 1983.
Gandy died Sunday night Dec 23, 2007 at her home in Glendale, MS. She was 87. She had suffered from Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, a disease similar to Parkinson�s disease.
