Hello! The names I am researching are Slazak,
Compely, & Compel. I started this club because of the
struggle I had just understanding where my family came
from. The region along the Polish border changed hands
many times. Between Russia, Poland, Austria, and
Czechoslovakia the area was a live wire. Town names changed as
well. This makes for a more difficult search. I have
discovered that my grandmother was from the Carpathian
Mountain area an area where the inhabitants were referred
to as White Russians. Grandmother often joked that
her mother was a hillbillie from the mountains of
Russia. That was about all I knew until I came across the
Lemko site I listed in the Links area. Then, I began to
understand why so many other areas and even ethnicities came
into play. This site was a great help to me. It even
had a link to a page that told all about the area
here in America where I knew my Gr. Grandparents
lived, down to the very street they lived on!!!(Thus,
the Passaic, New Jersey link). My Grandfather a
Czech, also came from this border area. I was told to
"watch ,The Sound of Music" and that would tell me where
he came from. While that was interesting, it didn't
seem very authentic. After reading more, I find it is
more realistic then I could have imagined. I am hoping
this site will help Russians, Lemkos, Jews, Czechs,
Polish, Boykos, Carpatho-Ruthenians, and others who are
researching this area to do so with a better understanding. I
am by no means a geneology specialist, quite the
contrary. But, I believe I have come up with some links
that will help clarify some things for those whose
roots lead them back to this confusing area that seems
to over-lap in every direction. Your input is
appreciated and any photos of the area or links you have to
share are welcome!
Josef & Anna Slazak's

To all viewing.....if you have info. regarding
research of the border area that you feel might be helpful
to myself and others researching their roots PLEASE
join and post the info. Any and all help is greatly
appreciated. If you have knowledge of the history of this area
and can shed light on it for others, that too would
be greatly appreciated as this knowledge helps us
pull together the bits and pieces of info. we may
have. You might think that the info. you have to offer
isn't substantial but I urge you to reconsider as a
small tibit of info. may be the missing link to
somebody understanding their family history.
Thanks So
Much!
Slazak25

I just want to encourage anyone who visits this
site to pray for America and it's leaders,
particularly our President. America's ancestors came here from
all over the over the world seeking the peace and
justice that hallmarked America. God led America into
victory and made it the great country it is.
Unfortunately, America has forgotten to thank God and to keep
Him as their focus. Pray that this tragedy will
humble us all and refocus Americans on God and His will.
God Bless America!
