Bright Stars, An Organic Tanka Anthology, is a serial anthology with no deadline. Each volume of bright new work will publish as it fills. An experimental project, Keibooks will publish as many volumes as can be filled during 2014.

Bright Stars seeks forwarding-looking, new, and experimental tanka poetry, tanka sequences, collaborative tanka, and tanka prose. A large format book, it will publish approximately one thousand tanka with an emphasis on new and emerging tanka, but anchored by well-established poets.

Bright Stars focuses on the Japanese aesthetic of ‘akarui’—bright, light, illuminated, brilliant, shiny, brassy, active, energetic, noisy, loud, happy, drunk, passionate, wild, playful, vivid, and boundless. That doesn’t mean you can’t send us dark poems—black is a color too—but it should be an active darkness, not a hand wringing, genteelly sighing darkness.

For examples of the kind of tanka and related poetry we seek, review the following special features at AtlasPoetica.org:

The Garage, Not the Garden : Tanka of Urban Life
25 Tanka for Children (and Educators)
      The Unspeakable Body
      Social Realism
Chiaroscuro—25 Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Tanka
All Hallow’s Evening : Supernatural Tanka

      Complete guidelines are at: http://atlaspoetica.org/?p=952

The first volume is 87% full and will publish soon. Send your submissions ASAP for a chance at publication in the inaugural volume.
