Please remember that not everyone  (thank heavens!) was Holocaust survivor. My grandmother and siblings came to the USA at the turn of the 20th century because of a series of illnesses and deaths. Also, at the last genealogy conference in Israel, someone mentioned the case of non-Jewish  children given to childless German couples when their Socialist parents were murdered by the Nazis. They were from Siltse, a nearby village.
So were are all curious about Podhajce, but our motives are different.

      Hello All,

As you may know, along with the tragedy of Podhajce's Jewish community, the town's Polish community (perhaps 30-40% of the population?) was violently expelled by Ukrainian and Soviet forces after WW2. Eastern Poland lost both its Jewish minority and its larger Polish minority.
Ms. Dolinska (see her email below) represents a Polish Podhajce group and they visit Podhajce every year. I am asking all interested parties to participate in the annual meeting, as th Poles seek reconciliation with the Ukrainians.

Kindly read the translation of thour email conversation below and let me know if you are interested...please note the emails are in reverse order.

      Regards,

      Welcome!

I let myself write again to the Lord, though our contact - so unexpectedly established - just as quickly broke out in May last year.
Our page on Podhajec, actually TMZP page, there is already (or maybe - just) a half years, we have many visits from both the Polish, as well as from throughout the world. This shows that many people who were born in Podhajce or in various other places on earth podhajeckiej, wants at least in such a way "to" where they lived themselves, or their families - parents, grandparents or relatives. He keeps you know how it is!
This year, in June, for the fourth time, Mr. Richard Wojciechowski - Chairman TMZP - organizes the trip a great group of people from Polish to Podhajec. I know that the oldest member of this trip will be over ninety man - obviously born TAM. There will be lectures, meetings ...
I, too, last year I was on such a departure, and I must admit that my emotion was huge, to this day I remember what you went through then. This year - unfortunately - I can not go, but I think that this trip will be successful! The most important thing that - as recently wrote - there could come to "conciliation meeting" and that nations representing three cultures can come together for reconciliation!

      Sincerely, Jolanta Dolińska

      Hi Jolanta!

Thank you for your e-mail ... it's nice that this interest in mind for the city, including us in this.

There are a number of Jewish Americans (with the family of Podhajce) who are planning a trip to Podhajce. I think it would be a nice gesture to ask the mayor Podhajce to an event where Poles and Jews were able to meet people. Perhaps "reconciliation meeting".

You know, after all the bad things that have occurred in times of war, it is a noble thing to reconcile any bad feelings between the three cultures of prewar Galicia. politics and history of the region is so difficult for the Poles, Jews and Ukrainians get along, people with difficulty: "You shall love your neighbor" as the Bible calls us to do.

Please let me know what you think - have a nice week!

      Witam serdecznie!

        Hi Francine,

I don't think I will ever forgot that many people did survive--thank goodness for that.

But undeniably, much of the attention is focused on memorializing and documenting those who died and to publicize it so people know what happened. Anger still seethes amond the various groups and this should be addressed.

This is why you find Poles (like Jolanta, below) trying to keep the memory alive by engaging in her activities...granted they have it easier as they are closer to their ancestral homes. It does not right any wrongs, but it helps people understand each other better.

As for Germans receiving Jewish children, this was repeated many thousands of times across Europe, and in many cases its a well-kept secret among the non-Jews who received hidden children...I was quite stunned in one of my visits to Podhajce to see a young girl stroll across the town...she was obviously of Jewish descent...children were probably given out even to the non-Jewish Podhajcers...ironically in the post-war ethnic transfers (of non-Jews), some hidden Jews found themselves on the wrong side once again once their host families were subjected to the various (non-Jewish) ethnic cleansing programs that marked the end of the war.

              Witam Jolanta!
