Hey all - back a topic that was brought up several weeks ago: How to let the
general public know that you don't need an ipod to listen to podcasts.

Here are a few simple techniques I came up with that require no money what
      so ever.

      1. Put it in your sig line right next to your podcast address.
      2. Put it on your web site. I've added it as text and as the alt to the
pod icons and title for links so when people hover over them that's what
they will see. Like so: <img src="images/podcastIcon.gif" alt="No iPod
      needed"> and <a href="http://activated.libsyn.com/" title="No iPod
      required.">
      3. Include a statement when you send out announcements for new
      episodes.

Hope you all have some more ideas!

          Hey Kimberly,

Since the podcasts I work on are targeted to fans of two TV shows
(Firefly and Farscape) many potential listeners have no idea what a
podcast even is. They're often just fans who follow links to learn
          more.

What we have done is to create links off our homepages to help the
podcasting newbies figure things out. Here are the two links I'm
          referring to...

Something I¹m using on my subscription page is the Feedburner email
subscription option. The average person understands email and when I tell
them they can subscribe via email and don¹t need an iPod or a Mac it¹s like

                  Kimberly -

Good ideas, I may add the text to my website.

Another thing to remember is the terminology that we use. When I started my
short form podcast on PodcasterNews.com, my mother wanted to listen to the
show, but had no idea how. It turned out that she didn't know what an mp3 was,
so the "Download mp3" link meant nothing to her (they have changed the link to
"Download Show" in response to this). Although things like this are second
nature to us, they may be completely confusing to numerous others.

                  Cheers -

                  george

                            Absolutely!

The Photoshop file with slices can be downloaded here:

                            http://www.coverville.com/art/noipod_sliced.psd

The whole document is in layers, so you can edit it to suit your
needs. I'd be grateful for a byline credit at the bottom, but only if
you feel the need. Just happy to help. If you have some ways to make
it easier to understand, and/or improvements, let me know, and I can
also make them on the original file.

The fonts I used were Myriad Pro (came with Photoshop), and
WebLetterer, which you can download for free here:

                            http://www.blambot.com/fonts.shtml

The Photoshop file is Mac format - don't know if it's cross platform.

Let me know if there's anything else you need!

                            Thanks,

I've been podcasting here in Brazil for almost two years now (I was
one of the first podcasters down here, and I'd invite you to check it
out, but it is in Brazilian Portuguese) :-). Your show was one of
the first ones I've listened to, and it has helped me deciding to
start my own show. Thanks again and keep up the great work!

I was at Podcast Academy 4 at Podcast Expo today and the inspirations
would not stop coming. I told Doug I got my money's worth the first hour.
When Leo talked he got another question about what to do about people
who think you have to have an ipod.
I already had this "brain shower." I mentioned it to some who didn't
seem impressed. Leo said he was impressed.

Please judge the concept and not the execution, I am on the road after
all and I would never recommend my voice be the one to use:

Put an icon and/or text link right at the top of your web page vis:
                                  <a href="http://media.libsyn.com/media/pilotcast/idonthaveanipod.mp3">I
                                  don't have an iPod!</a>

Of course any of us can do our own version of that.

What I have in mind that we get Leo and/or others to make a recording
that we all can link to. Leo said it was great idea, and "What do you
                                  want me to say?"

Now, what would we want to say? It should be short and sweet.

Leo said he was going to rush out and register the domain name, Too
                                  late. |-{)

It could go to a script something like "I didn't hear anything" with a
"Try this" flash player version, different formats or maybe make it a
flash player in the first place and then show or reference the "What is
a podcast?" explanation web pages previously discussed.

What'dya think? IS this a good idea or was Leo just humoring the big

Pilot Mike, I think it's a great usability suggestion similar to what
FeedBurner attempts to do with is XML styling of its feeds and the
chicklets that automatically added in. We can rarely assume users know
what the terms mean and it only helps to provide something obvious to
find, easy to apprehened, with a low technology barrier.

If you go with the principle that the more ways you communicate the more
likely you'll get the idea across, then I would envision a Flash player
(cross browser, cross platform) that served up both video and audio.
People seem to pay better attention when there's a "face" to go with the
message. Make it small, fleet, and short. Include on-screen text that
emphasizes what's being said (like the URL).

I should leave the script suggestions to better minds than mine, but
since I have too much temerity and not enough wisdom, feel free to hash
it out, or delete. My suggestion:

"Hi, this is Leo Laporte from This Week in Tech and I'm here to
tell you: you don't need an iPod to enjoy a podcast.

"All you need is exactly what you're using right now: a computer
... and the Internet. A podcast is simply audio or video that you
can download any time to enjoy any where. In fact, you can
download the podcasts on this page right now and start listening
                                    or watching right away.

"But if you want to automatically download future podcasts from
this site, you'll want to install some simple software, called a
podcatcher. And if you want to take your downloads on the road,
you'll want to use an MP3 player for audio podcasts or a digital
                                    video player for video podcasts.

"You don't have to have an iPod.

"It's really very simple. If you want to know more, just visit
www.idonthaveanipod.com and we'll help you out."

                                    Hack away!

                                    Regards,

                                      Mike -

I think all ideas to get the point across are helpful.

One thing people might want to do is to play my friends Uncle Seth's song "You
Don't Need an iPod," which can be found at http://musicpodcast.ca/podcast-psa/.
I'm willing to bet that there are iPod users who don't understand that you
don't need an iPod to play podcasts, so this would work for them to realize
                                      this.

BTW, after adding a Flash player onto the show pages for my two podcasts, I saw
a small but definite increase in listenership. I now point people who don't
know much about podcasts there, as a quick explanation can be easily forgotten.
The ability to visit a website (which nearly everyone has done) and click a
button to hear the show is an easy, small step in getting people to understand
                                      what this is all about.

                                      Cheers -
