      Hi.

We're getting down to the last couple robotics team meetings before the
kickoff event, and I'd like to start announcing the details of our local
      kickoff.

      1) Is this the correct address? (This is from FIRST's site)

      International School Performing Arts Center
      International School
      445 128th Ave SE
      Bellevue, WA 98005

      2) What was the result with payments? Will there be a per-team charge? What
is it? We need to get a PO submitted and approved.

      3) When will the meeting be?

I liked being able to sleep in a bit last year, but I thought the tape delay
      had a couple drawbacks:

      * Many of the students (and mentors) had watched the live broadcast at home,
so there seemed to be a lot of talking and distractions from people not
paying attention to the broadcast. This made it hard for people who hadn't
watched (or cared about seeing it again!) to hear.

      * We had less time for brainstorming and planning after the event.

I don't know if it's possible to get the NASA feed at the International
School, but if it is, I'd like to have the group consider meeting at 7 to
watch live. (Those of you who know me, know how much I hate getting up
early, but I really think this is a better option.)

      Thanks,

Thanks for starting us off Cathy !

item 2) about the cost/charge is probably one of the higher items on my list. It is easier for me to do a team charge than a per person charge, if there is still going to be one.

Also, the tape delay from last year was mainly because of teh weather problems from last year. The original plan was bright and early but the roads were icy and whatnot, turned out to be not the problem we thought it be.
Hopefully roads will stay clear (for kick off as well as for the FLL this weekend)

Hope we are all a bit excited....or what ever emotion robotics brings you :-)

However, I think it turned out poorly last year. Maybe it was because a lot
of people had already seen the video live, or because it was hard to hear
the audio, or because of the excitement of having snow on the ground, but
there was a lot of chatter during the video, which was rude and compounded
the problem with the audio. I asked several groups of students repeatedly to
be quiet and was largely ignored. I felt like the group viewing was not a
good way to view the kick-off video and mostly wasted two hours that we
could have spent brainstorming. I also felt like an idiot for pushing our
students to come to the event.

I really appreciate the Roosevelt team and organizers of the event. I'm sure
it was a lot of work especially with the last-minute snow storm. I'm only
raising this issue because I think if the most motivated among us are going
to organize a group viewing, it should be productive.

Maybe 10:00 will work out better, especially for the teams that have a long
drive. Maybe if the sound level is sufficient that it's easy to hear the
video, people won't get bored and start babbling. Whatever is decided, I
think we as a group need to enforce appropriate behavior and remove people
who demonstrate their lack of interest in the video by being disruptive.

I also was liking the tape delay but I agree with the problem of some folks having seen the broadcast.
I hate getting up early and would not mind a tape delay again with the idea you put forth

We should be able to police our own teams on this. I feel the brainstorming is very important to the experience.

In any event we'll be there...

issues finding it, feel free to give me a call at 206-384-2074.
              Hopefully I'll be awake :-)

              - I believe we are planning on a non-delayed, 7:00am Live Kickoff
              Presentation.
As I recall, the TRC had a pretty bad experience with the last-minute
delays due to snow, which only were possible because of the fact that we
were tape delaying in the first place. In fact, I don't think any TRC
members made it to the "official" regional kickoff, which really started
our season off poorly compared to 2004. I appreciate the fact that 7:00
am is early, especially when you are trying to get students there,
especially right after winter break, and especially all the way from
Tacoma. However, I also strongly feel that the because it is hard to do,
getting up early is a great way to build team unity, and to really make
the kickoff feel like the special and important event that it is.

              - Based on previous feedback from this group, we are hoping to do a
per-team charge. We are figuring out all the numbers so we will know
              what that charge will be.

              - We will expect that teams police themselves; however, if a disruption
does arise, we will be happy to remove the cause from the Performing
Arts Center for the duration of the kickoff video. :-)

The numbers have been crunched and the details reviewed:

=== 2005 FIRST Robotics Competition Remote Kickoff ===

                  Location:
                      Performing Arts Center
                      Bellevue International School
                      445 128th Ave SE
                      Bellevue, WA 98005

                  Invited:
All Washington State FIRST Robotics Teams
Please RSVP with your team's intentions, even if you don't know how many people will attend, as soon as possible. When you have a good idea of about how many club members will be showing up, please let us know that number as well.

                  Cost:
There will be a per-team cost of $75. This goes entirely to covering our costs, as we are required to pay for the person to operate the projector and a custodian for the duration of the event. We are also hoping to get some sponsorship from Devry univeristy and possibly a few others, but don't hold your breath. I'll send out payment details shortly, so that the bureacracies that churn out the checks can begin moving.

                  A few details:
The kickoff will begin at 7:00 and nominally last an hour and a half
We should have a working model of at least part of the playing field ready for the kickoff
After the video, several things will happen, and I'm not yet sure of their order:
                         - Perhaps somebody will give a short speech to the group
                         - Participants will be encouraged to interact with the field elements in mock games to get an understanding of the workings of field elements and strategies
                         - Kits will be handed out to each team
                         - Around 11:00, we are planning on having food available for purchase from Baja Fresh.
                         - Teams will be encouraged to talk with each other... perhaps during lunch groups of students can get together from different teams to discuss common interests
                         - We will adjourn (this probably happens last!)

                  === - ===

                  Hope to see everyone there!

getting up early is a great way to build team unity, and to really make
the kickoff feel like the special and important event that it is.

Checks should be made payable to "International School ASB"
The check should also have "For TRC" written on it.
When you send the check, please include a paper with your team name and number on it, for our accounting purposes.

                      Checks can be sent to:
                      International School

I think the non delay kick off works better for all of your arguments. It is a pretty big day. I know my team members that have been around a few years keep telling the freshman about "having to get up early on "saturday" because thats the only way to start the season off."

The sooner you know what the charges are the easier it is for , at least my team, to get it transfered.

                      Thanks

addressed. I think I can already answer a few questions that have come up:

                      - The address you sent, Cathy, is correct. Here it is again:
                         International School Performing Arts Center
                         International School
                         445 128th Ave SE

Mapquest, Google maps, Yahoo maps, etc should all work. If anyone has
issues finding it, feel free to give me a call at 206-384-2074.

                              Hi Ryan.

Cool, thanks. I find it's easier to know when something is paid if I get the
check and can make sure it gets delivered!

Next issue: I need some sort of invoice. The school won't write a check to
IS ASB without documentation of its purpose, something more official than
                              email.

                              Thanks,
                              Cathy

Cool, thanks. I find it's easier to know when something is paid if I get the
check and can make sure it gets delivered!

Next issue: I need some sort of invoice. The school won't write a check to
IS ASB without documentation of its purpose, something more official than
                                email.

Cool, thanks. I find it's easier to know when something is paid if I get the

Next issue: I need some sort of invoice. The school won't write a check to

Cool, thanks. I find it's easier to know when something is paid if I get the
check and can make sure it gets delivered!

Next issue: I need some sort of invoice. The school won't write a check to
IS ASB without documentation of its purpose, something more official than
                                      email.
