        realize that they are over-reacting.

        Or, they will have to calm down in order to hear what you are saying,
        and maybe lean in.

        Or, if that doesnt work, then leave the situtation. remove yourself
        from the room; and give them time to calm down. (I know a wife who left
        an angry husband and stayed at a hotel overnight). After you have done
        that a few times (over days or weeks or months) they will SEE what they
        are doing. It is a cue to them that something is wrong....like training
        a dog not to bark.

        But as you can see above, by YOU reacting in a violent way will just
        feed their fuel. It will accelerate the situation.
