THE PUBLIC LIBRARY OF RAWALPINDI SUFFERS GREAT LOSS

The Municipal Library, Liaqat Bagh has been completely destroyed due to
record heavy rains and floods in Rawalpindi. The collection of 30,000 rare
and other valuable books are completely destroyed whereas the other 10,000
books, which were in the upper level shelves, are partially affected. The
shelves, carpets and other library items have completely disappeared. The
building of the library is also badly affected. The loss of 9.9 millions
      rupees has been estimated.

The Municipal Library was established in 1873. It was one of the largest
public library f the Rawalpindi city with a large collection of books on
history, Pakistan studies, sociology, Urdu literature, politics, religion,
medical sciences, and economics. Punjab Library Foundation and the Asia
Foundation had also contributed in the collection development of the
library. The library was also serving the people of Islamabad, Attock,
Hasanm Abdal, Gujar Khan, and Wah Cantt. Due to it's liberal circulation
policy, the public of these areas used to come in the library to borrow the
books. The average visitors of the library were 200 daily.

This is a great loss for the 6000 members of the library and general public
of this region. The public libraries are far and few in Rawalpindi and
Municipal Library was the only place where the public used to come for
reference, reading and borrowing the books.
