     Department of Library & Information Science, University of the Punjab in collaboration with PU Library, PLA and PULISAA organized a walk and a seminar to celebrate World Book & Copyright Day on 23rd April, 2013. Walk with colorful banners and placards by students started from Department at 10.00 a.m. and reached to Al-Razi Hall. A large number of students, faculty members and library professionals joined the walk with the messages of promoting books reading and their role in society.

    The seminar on the Role of Books, Reading and Libraries in the Modern Age: Scholars’ Perspective was followed by the walk. Renowned guest speakers: Orya Maqbool Jan (Secretary Archives and Libraries, Govt. of the Punjab) & Prof. Dr. Arifa Syeda Zehra (Historian and writer, FCCU, Lahore) spoke on the importance of books and reading in society. Prof. Dr. Mujahid Kamran (Vice Chancellor, University of the Punjab, Lahore) was invited as Chief Guest.
     
    Orya Maqbool Jan addressed the lack of interest of our governments in establishing public libraries. He added that books, reading & research play a vital role in the development of society and nation. Prof. Dr. Arifa Syeda Zehra highlighted the value of books and reading in a very literary manner. Prof. Dr. Kamran Mujahid considered the big reason of Muslims downfall is lack of interest in reading and research. He further stressed that books should be cheap and at youth’s doorstep. All the speeches were highly applauded by the audience.
     
    Prof. Dr. Kanwal Ameen (Chairperson, DLIS) advised the young librarians to modify their roles and be information providers. She asked the audience to set a tradition to gift books to each other to promote reading habits. Prof. Dr. Khalid Mahmood thanked all the participants and guest speakers and event collaborators (PU Library, PLA and PULISAA) for their participation and contribution. Later, books and shields were distributed among guest speakers. Refreshments sponsored by the Vice Chancellor were served to the participants.
